“I never dreamed of becoming an actress or a movie star. As a young girl I won two scholarships to the prestigious Chicago Art Institute where I hoped one day to become a great artist. Working as a model during junior college, I traveled to Hollywood on summer vacation where I was discovered by an agent and signed to Columbia Pictures. In 1956 I became the No. 1 box office star in the world for three years, starring opposite actors such as Jimmy Stewart, William Holden and Frank Sinatra, and working with Directors like Alfred Hitchcock. My most famous film was Hitchcock’s “Vertigo,” which is considered by many to be the greatest movie ever made. “Picnic” and “Bell, Book and Candle” were two of my favorites. It is so rewarding to know that my film work is receiving more acclaim with the passage of time. Although I have never received an Oscar, I was given a Golden Globe and have been honored with the prestigious Golden Bear Award for Lifetime Achievement. In 2003 I was presented with the Eastman Kodak Archives Award for my contribution to film – preceded by honorees Greta Garbo, Jimmy Stewart, Audrey Hepburn, Martin Scorsese and Meryl Streep. At the height of my film career I decided to walk away from Hollywood – not wanting to fall prey to the tragic endings that often result when stars and sex symbols get lost in an identity crisis. I turned my back on a successful and lucrative career to define who I was and what I really wanted to give and get out of life. I moved to a cliffside dwelling along the wild coast of Big Sur, California with the purpose of creating a lifestyle in harmony with nature while combining it with my love of painting and writing poetry. I remember how pleased I was when one of my poems was made into a song and recorded by the Kingston Trio and Harry Belafonte. I married twice, first to a Shakespearean actor from England after we fell in love while filming “The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders,” and then again to my soul mate, equine veterinarian Robert Malloy. We now live with our dogs and horses in Southern Oregon. When not off riding in the hills and valleys, I am off painting the hills and valleys. My first dream has never changed. I feel so grateful for the perspective I gained while experiencing the art of “make believe” in Hollywood, and then returning to my first goal to refine my talent and paint my feeling. Over these years I have had the opportunity to study with many fine artists. I have been particularly blessed to receive the wisdom and influence of my two great and irreplaceable mentors, Harley Brown and Richard McKinley. Now I feel ready to share some of the results of these past years. My only limitations are the boundaries of my imagination. I hope always to be able to stretch my mind as I exercise my body so that I will can keep growing my dreams and expressing my fantasies. I’ve lived a long rich life, and the wonders of Nature have allowed my eyes to retain their innocence to experience things for the first time. There is so much of life that still touches me profoundly, and if I can touch someone else along the way, in my own way, I can’t imagine any better reward!”

I Am Planning to Retire…

I am planning to retire…not from expressing my feelings through the arts, but from the business of selling limited editions of some of my paintings as giclée prints. I remember when my website first started—it was exciting, yet complicated. At that time I was trying to prove to the vultures at the State Tax Board that part of my art could become a business. As you know, I rarely sold my originals, as they are like my children, wanting them to live on and be seen forever at the Butler Museum of American Art after my passing.

Thanks to the invaluable help of my dear friend, Hannah West, my website has become so much more than just a business. It has given me the opportunity to get to know you—and you to know me. Your appreciation has inspired me beyond words. It has given me the boost I needed to keep on painting my feelings.

Please forgive me if you are among those disappointed that my giclée prints are no longer available for purchase. My new year’s goal is to cut back on all activities that complicate and obligate the time I have left here on Earth. My desire is to simplify my life…to be free to wonder and wander wherever my precious path—and my horse—lead me.

I will still try to keep my website going so that you can see all my new paintings and poems as they happen. Also, my book, “KIM NOVAK: HER ART AND LIFE” will still be available and sold through the Butler Museum, which owns all the rights and profits. (You can find the signed copy here and the unsigned copy here.)

It has TRULY been an honor to share my journey with you!

❤️ Kim

Hope

HOPE
For me, my new year begins on my birthday. So here’s my new year’s resolution for 2023.

My heart has been empowered to keep going by those who believe in me. I vow to work on a bridge called HARMONY no matter what! I will apply fresh paint daily, using nothing but the best for lasting protection—guaranteed to restore good health by releasing all pent-up emotions. HOPE will be my “North Star”!

YOU HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE IN MY LIFE AND I AM MOST GRATEFUL!

I want to thank you who have given me the much-needed appreciation and understanding to express myself through the arts. I hope that you are aware of how much you have touched me. I ask for your forgiveness in not providing you with your well-deserved, one on one, response. My full and rewarding life style has much to do with the need to prioritize my time. Yes, time has become even more precious and elusive as these years have flown by.

Please know and feel my appreciation for your special gift of inspiration that gives me the courage to move forward on my predestined path. My gift to you is the many secret messages contained in my art.

Video: Kim Prepares for Opening of her 2019 Retrospective

I thought you might enjoy seeing a video of last minute preparations for my Retrospective at the Butler Art Museum. My good friend, Linda Solomon, sent it last week for the one year anniversary of the exhibition. You will have a chance to see some of my never exhibited early artworks — including a large oil painting of my Sis!

I’m pleased to be able to share this with you.
❤️ Kim

PS: Be sure and look for the beautiful scarf with my painting, “If Only,” on it. Linda had it specially made for the exhibit!

When you click the link below, the video will play in a new tab in your browser.

I decided not to tell what I was thinking in this painting…other than the fact that we are now living in an ‘upside down world.’ I hope you can take comfort by turning my image in any direction — when you feel the need for a change…

Try to find peace and enjoy!
